Make art. See art. Buy art.

The Newport Art Museum’s annual celebration of new art returns on August 18 and 19, 2012, sponsored by WILLIAM VAREIKA FINE ARTS LTD, with additional support from Edward and Wendy Harvey, Joseph A. Chazan, MD and Skinner Inc.

Hundreds or artworks - many created outdoors on Saturday morning - will be sold during silent and live auctions by day’s end on Sunday. It’s a much-anticipated event every year for artists in search of an audience, art collectors seeking new finds, and visitors looking for unique remembrances of Newport. General admission to the Museum is free all weekend. The Wet Paint Preview Saturday evening 6 - 8pm costs $10/$15. A Champagne Brunch on Sunday at 10am costs $100. No charge to bid at the silent or live auction. Family games and entertainment outdoors on Sunday afternoon at the Museum. Check website for Museum hours and complete schedule.

Artists’ Ball: Estab. 1920 - Remixed 2012

The box office is open and tickets are HOT for the return of the Artists’ Ball on May 12, 8 - midnight. A tradition here since 1920, there hasn’t been an Artists’ ball at the Newport Art Museum since 2007. Bringing the event back for our centennial makes sense and everyone who remembers past Artists’ Balls is thrilled. Remember the Dance of the Diggers? Or the giant mammoth over the reception desk for the Cave Ball?

For newcomers and old hands, here’s the scoop:

Artists Sandy Nesbitt and Chris Wyllie are co-chairing the event.

Dress code: Alter-egos, costumes and bold attire are encouraged.

Featuring: DJ JR and burlesque performers Kristen Minksy & the TropiGals

Exhibiting artists: Peter Diepenbrock and Jerold Ehrlich

Hors d’oeuvres, sweets, complimentary signature cocktail and a cash bar

Tickets cost $60 in advance or $80 at the door.

The Memories & Messages Project celebrates our centennial

Creative and curious people founded our predecessor, the Art Association of Newport, in 1912. One hundred years later, the Newport Art Museum continues to enhance community life as a shared place for the arts, ideas and culture.

As a Newport Art Museum visitor, member or supporter, your story is part of our story. Your hopes for the future will help guide us as we move into our second century. We’ve launched the Memories & Messages Project to help bring you into the picture. Part oral history, part archive, part birthday celebration, the project aims to compile Museum memories and anniversary messages from you – the Newport Art Museum community.

Send us your birthday greetings, Newport Art Museum memories, photos and videos about the Museum or your experiences here, or create a work of art to mark the Centennial. We’ll be posting your contributions all year on Facebook, tumblr, YouTube, on our website, in print publications, archival albums and inside the Museum.

You can start today - tumblr makes it easy to submit videos, photos and text. Read the tumblr help pages for submission instructions.
